The Department of Surgery at the Western Hospital is an integral part of a clinical-based Department of Surgery (Royal Melbourne and Western Hospitals) of the University of Melbourne. The Department of Surgery at the Western Hospital was established in 1992 as part of an initiative to develop a major teaching hospital campus at the Western Hospital.

Clinical Teaching

The Department of Surgery is involved in clinical teaching, research and post-graduate teaching programs.

The teaching undertaken involves programs for Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery for Semesters 8 and 9 and Semester 12 students. Clinical teaching at the Western Hospital provides an expansive range of clinical experience available to students.
The fields of research in the Western Hospital unit of the Department are mainly in tumour biology of the gastrointestinal tract.
There are also strong affiliations with Western Hospital clinical staff in undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programs.
